Who should schedule an annual physical?

Everyone over the age of three should schedule an annual physical. Before three years, infants and toddlers need well-child exams more often than once a year.

Even if you feel fine, you should still have a routine physical. These exams provide preventive care, giving you the best chance to stay healthy through exams that find the earliest signs of problems.

What happens during a physical?

Whether you need an annual physical or a school physical, your provider updates your medical history and takes your vitals (weight, blood pressure, and heart rate). Then they complete a physical exam before deciding if you need further laboratory or diagnostic testing.

In addition to an exam, you can get many services during a physical, depending on your unique health needs. A few examples include:

  • Immunizations
  • Children’s well-child visits
  • Women’s health care
  • Men’s health care
  • Health risk assessments
  • Birth control
  • Mental health assessments
  • Medication management
  • Weight loss management
  • Chronic health management

During your physical, your provider also identifies and manages chronic diseases, like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease.

Can I get a sports physical?

Yes, you can get a sports physical at Benech Family Clinic. Students who want to participate in school or community sports need to have a sports physical before they can play.

Sports physicals protect your child’s health by ensuring they’re physically able to engage in sports without risking harm to their body. In addition to checking vision, hearing, reflexes, and performing a general physical, a sports physical focuses on your child’s musculoskeletal health.

Your provider evaluates the strength, health, and movement of muscles, joints, and bones. They look for signs of overuse injuries and check any previous injuries to be sure they’re fully healed.

Sports physicals also include a heart evaluation. Though sudden death due to a heart abnormality is very rare in people younger than 35, it can happen to teens engaged in competitive sports.

What are work physicals?

Work physicals are similar to an annual physical, but employers require them to be sure you’re fit enough to do the job. What happens during your physical depends on what your employer requests. For example, your provider may need to check your heart, examine your musculoskeletal system, screen for movement and balance disorders, or check for hernias.
